Starting a New Career in Real Estate
Congratulations on earning your real estate licence! Just getting started on a new real estate career is an exciting time.
There is a flurry of instant advice to help get started, but not all will work for everyone. Advice, and the type of person, must be compatible. Foundation building considerations are important and apply to just about everyone. After all, as a real estate representative you are basically self-employed and starting a new business.
More coursework is in the future and much more to learn about real estate. For now, let’s just get started off on the right track. Moreover, you will find plenty of books and articles about being effective and successful. But that’s not what we’re going to talk about in this article, however, we are going to look at some ideas to start off with to help with being organized.
In the meantime, whether you have found a brokerage to work for or not, you can still use this article to help. Some of the things in this article do depend on having successfully landed a job.
Let’s get started.
Email for Work
First, I would like to suggest that you get an email account for work. At some point, the line between work and personal life is going to get blurred, but right now it isn’t. Most Brokerages set up an email account for representatives. However, the problem with that is, when a representative leaves the Brokerage, you can’t take the email with you. The potential of losing a great deal of valuable networking and contact information. Make sure the email address makes business sense. Use your own name or some sort of snappy tag that will be memorable for clients.
Social media
With so many different social media platforms to choose from, what you pick for social media is entirely up to you. Signing up for everything is probably not a good idea. It’s a great deal of work maintaining them all. However, whatever you choose, make sure it looks professional; a good headshot, nice graphics, and easy to find contact information. Ensure everyone you know is informed, start making connections on the first day, and don’t be shy. If they don’t know that you’re a real estate agent, then they can’t approach you to do business. I have written an article about developing a network, even if you’re a little bit shy, you can read it here.
Modern, Mobile, Turnkey Real Estate website
That’s right! You can have your own site. Modern, mobile, turnkey real estate websites are affordable and make sense. A website is a place that you can use to promote yourself, demonstrate your expertise and communicate ideas to your website visitors. Your website will also work well with your social media accounts and set you apart from the crowd. It can be a powerful tool and you should use it to promote yourself and to network.
You don’t have to be a webmaster to have a real estate website. Real Estate website platforms are a turnkey deployment. Fill in the blanks, select the theme, hook up to your board idx and you are good to go. You will have to find a domain name that would be easy for people to remember, and registering domains is easy and not very expensive. Get Started Today! CLICK HERE
Real estate website and your blog
Most platforms will have a Blog. Use it! Write articles. There are things that you know that will make for an interesting story. However, if you don’t have any ideas, use the internet for research, and write a story based on your research. If you start writing a blog, be faithful and consistent. Your blog articles can be written in advance and ready to publish.
I’m not going to lie, it is hard at first writing articles, but you can do it. You should include at least one picture in a blog post. And don’t forget to also post them to your social media.
Developing good work habits
Find a rhythm. Don’t put pressure on yourself, especially in the early days. But it is important to create a solid routine. Be obviously involved with social media and your website. Consistency will demonstrate reliability. Remember to post your blog articles to social media.
You might need a part time job
A career in real estate means you are self-employed and deals take time to close. You won’t be paid until they close. Working part time you will be able to schedule real estate business to work around your schedule.
Tax Advice
It wouldn’t hurt to consult with an expert. You need the facts and understand your responsibility. There is strength in knowledge and it will empower you to make wise financial decisions.
Duty Shifts
Brokerages, which are open evenings and Saturdays, often schedule an on duty sales person for phone calls and walk-ins. Sign up for as many as you can. It is a fabulous opportunity for you to pick up your next client. If it isn’t busy, it’s also a good structured time that you can use, perhaps to write your next blog article.
Make a Plan, Set some Goals
Many people struggle with goal setting. They fail to realize that just organizing a trip to the grocery store requires planning. Start small, perhaps just a week at a time, and expand planning as you become more comfortable. Goal setting and following a plan will create feelings of accomplishment. If you miss a goal, reschedule it for a new time frame. Avoid ‘feeling bad’ about it.

Maybe someday, in forty years or so, you will write an article like this. You will very likely have thoughtful advice to share. Until then, we wish you all the best and great success with your career in real estate.
